Our Science Experiment

We have been learning about the rock cycle. On Friday, the students participated in an experiment about the various stages of the rock cycle. First, we shaved bits of crayon to represent the sedimentary rock stage.

Then we applied heat to the crayon shavings with an iron to represent the igneous stage.

For the final stage, Mrs. Moehlmann took the smaller "rocks" and used the stove to make one big metamorphic rock.

Homework 9.22.09

Tuesday 9.22.09

Today we talked about ways that authors start their writing pieces. Here is the list we brainstormed. We also looked at different ways to revise our own writing so that we can "hook" our readers. There are also some videos of students who have revised their pieces.

Year Round Schooling?

Did you know that our president, Barack Obama, believes that we need to spend more time in the classroom? Today, we read an article about if children should participate in year round schooling or not. Around 3,000 schools have year round programs. What do you think? Please feel free to post your opinions.

Math Website

I was wondering if you could help me out...Several teachers are following our blog. We were having a discussion yesterday about blogs and how they are different from our website.

If you have a free minute, please reply to this post answering any or all of the following questions....What do you love about our blog? What is your favorite part of blogging? How does our blog help you as a parent? as a student? What tips do you have for teachers who are just getting started with blogging? Thank you in advance for your thoughts!

Landform Maps

The students really enjoyed this activity! It was a little crazy yesterday with early release.

Speaking of early release, the teachers all received their new laptops. They are super cool tablets that you can even take notes with. I was having trouble figuring out how to upload pictures so I will be sure to add photos tomorrow. I am also working on getting the ELMO fixed. I promise I have not forgotten about taking digital images of the assignment book. I know how helpful that was for everyone.

Interactive Writing-Tic-Tac-Toe Board

By Chris, Alex, Ethan, Molly, Lucas, and Brock

Our tic tac toe bulletin board has many fun math games to play. There are nine different games to explore. When you complete a game, you x it out on your game board. The object is to play three games in a row just like tic-tac-toe. We worked on several math concepts including place value, problem solving, and patterns. We like the games because they are fun and challenging!

Book Clubs-starting tomorrow!

We will be starting book clubs at school tomorrow. We have finally completed learning about the various jobs. When the children meet, they will be working together to read the same material but each will be completing a different assignment each time the clubs meet. As you already know, we learned about 2 previous roles-discussion director and movie critic.

The new roles we learned today are dialogue director, casting director, and production designer. Check out this movie to learn more about these roles.

Speaking of books...feel free to place orders from our scholastic book order this month. The web address is www.scholastic.com/bookclubs The user name is amoehlmann and the password is pass. Thank you in advance for these orders. The orders are due Sept. 23rd.

Interactive Writing-Rock Fun Facts

By Kenneth, Thomas, and Jordyn
In Science, we are learning about rocks and minerals. One day we observed a package of rocks. We took magnifying glasses and looked at the interesting features of the rocks. One feature we noticed was the hardness of the samples. The rocks came in many different shapes, colors, and sizes.

Our Science Explorations with Rocks

Today we started researching rocks in Science. We used the laptops to explore these 3 links.
http://www.diigo.com/list/amoehlmann/science_rocks

What We Learned:
Up to 100,000 tons of rock fall from space to the Earth each year.
The largest Topaz crystal was found in Brazil in 1940. It weighted about 600 pounds.
Heat and pressure can change rocks-we call this metamorphic change.
Limestone is made from dead skin of sea animals.
Rocks have different hardness.
There are 3 types of rocks-igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.
Crystal is the hardest type of rock.
Most rocks are made from minerals.
Some rocks contain fossils.
The oldest rock is in Canada.

Our Post for the Week 9.11.09-9.18.09

Here is a post for our new assignment for the week:
1. What are you reading? Please give us a brief summary.
2. Be sure to include your name.

Have a spectacular weekend!

P.S. In case your child comes home telling you our big news (as I shared it with them today), my husband and I are going to adopt a baby. We are sending in our paperwork today for a domestic adoption. We are very excited!

Reading Log-A New Idea!

Dear Students and Parents,

Thank you so much for sharing all of your summaries this week on the blog. It was actually an experiment to find out who would make an effort to read our blog. Since it was so successful, I am going to reward you by letting you make a weekly post on the blog INSTEAD of keeping a reading log. I noticed that your responses were much more thoughtful on the internet. In addition, it gives all of us a way to see what others in the class are reading. I am so proud of your work. Now, if you would rather keep a weekly log, I can give you one. It is your personal choice.

As for what you read and how much, I would like to encourage you to read materials with a plot. No more Garfield friends! This is considered to me easy reading and is not going to help you improve your reading habits. You still need to read at least 5 nights a week. I just don't want you to feel stressed about always writing a summary every night.

I Want to be a Poet
By Christina

I want to be a poet,
not a doctor or nurse,
not a fat old woman who
walks around with her purse.

I want to be a poet,
never mind a fine person,
and I just can't wait
for a very good reason.

A poet likes to
write poems like this.
My mom says I'm already one,
but I'm nothing compared to my big sis.

Then one day I asked my mom,
"Do you know what I want to be?"
My mom said, "No!" So I said to her,
"I want to be a poet you see!"

Please feel free to comment...
